Characteristics of a Godly Man?

What makes a man godly? Is it his strength, his wisdom, or his faith? Or is it something else entirely? The answer to this question lies at the heart of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning.

In a world filled with ever-changing values and expectations, many seek guidance on what it means to be a godly man. The Bible, as a source of timeless wisdom, provides clear and unchanging principles that help shape the characteristics of a man who seeks to honour God and live a purposeful life.

Here is a closer look at what the Bible reveals about the character of a godly man.

1. Integrity and Honesty

“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.” (Proverbs 10:9)

A godly man upholds integrity and honesty in all aspects of his life. He is known for his sincerity and trustworthiness, standing firm in his commitment to truth, even when difficult.

2. Humility

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2)

Humility is a hallmark of godliness. A humble man acknowledges his dependence on God, doesn’t boast about his achievements, and is willing to serve others with a compassionate heart.

3. Faithfulness

“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13)

A godly man is unwavering in his faith, both in God and in his commitments. He remains faithful to his promises, family, and community, demonstrating loyalty even in the face of challenges.

4. Love and Compassion

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34)

A godly man exemplifies love and compassion. He loves others selflessly and cares for their needs, following the example of Christ’s love for us.

5. Servant Leadership

“But whoever would be great among you must be your servant.” (Mark 10:43)

A godly man is a servant leader, following the example of Jesus. He leads humbly, prioritising the well-being of those under his care, whether in his family, workplace, or community.

6. Self-Control

“But the fruit of the Spirit is…self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

A godly man exercises self-control over his desires and impulses. He is disciplined in his actions, refraining from harmful behaviours and addictions.

7. Prayer and Dependence on God

“Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!” (1 Chronicles 16:11)

A godly man recognises the need for a close relationship with God through prayer and dependence on His guidance. He seeks God’s wisdom and direction in all aspects of his life.

8. Forgiveness and Reconciliation

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

A godly man is quick to forgive and seeks reconciliation when conflicts arise. He understands the importance of extending grace as he has received it from God.

9. Pursuit of Righteousness

“But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:11)

A godly man actively pursues righteousness and holy living. He strives to align his life with God’s Word and is committed to making choices that honour God.

These virtues serve as a roadmap for those who seek to live in a way that mirrors God’s love and purpose. By adopting these qualities, we can create a meaningful life that has a positive impact not only on ourselves but also on the world around us.
