Manhood is not a solo journey. It is a team sport that requires support, guidance, and accountability from other men. Here are four upsides of why manhood is a team sport.
- Iron sharpens iron
The book of Proverbs says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). This means that men need other men to help them grow and improve. Just as two pieces of iron rubbing against each other sharpen each other, men rubbing shoulders with other men help each other become better.
- Shared experiences build brotherhood
Shared experiences create a bond between men. This is why many men form strong bonds through sports, military service, or other shared experiences. The Bible says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity” (Proverbs 17:17). When men go through tough times together, they become closer and more supportive of each other.
- Accountability leads to growth
When men hold each other accountable, they help each other grow. The Bible says, “Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed” (James 5:16). When men hold each other accountable to their commitments, they help each other become better men.
- Mentorship leads to legacy
When older men mentor younger men, they help them become better men. This is why the Bible says, “The glory of young men is their strength, grey hair the splendour of the old” (Proverbs 20:29). Older men have the wisdom and experience to guide younger men and help them create a legacy for themselves.
Manhood is a team sport because it requires other men to help us become better men. We can become the best versions of ourselves through iron sharpening iron, shared experiences building brotherhood, accountability leading to growth, and mentorship leading to legacy.
